Have you ever had to take a stand for something in your life? To take a stand it usually takes someone who shows honesty, bravery, and empathy. In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This story is based around a girl named Scout Finch who lives in Maycomb County, Alabama during the great depression in the 1930’s. Scout’s dad, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer who is assigned to case to defend a man named Tom Robinson who was accused for raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. During this time black people were seen as different because of the color of their skin. Almost all of the white people in Maycomb County believe that Atticus should not be trying to win the case since Tom is a black man. It makes sense for Atticus to take a stand for Tom Robinson, for he is compassionate and tries to love everyone equally. …show more content…

This also shows how strong of a moral character he has. Atticus always tried to follow the Golden Rule by treating everyone how they want to be treated. Atticus states, “If spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take” (218). This shows how compassionate Atticus was to everyone he had met because he cared about them. The text also states, “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (39). This shows how Atticus knows that you can't just disobey and not follow the Golden Rule without realizing what they are going through.
