What is True Courage?
In the story The Wizard of Oz, the lion is known to have courage but its deep inside him and he goes ona journey to discover it. Courage is something that comes within the heart and soul, not like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, who was strong on the outside but not so courageous on the inside. The dictionary defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is something that can help someone become more grown up and to be defined as what kind of person they are. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the characteristic courage is found developing in many of the characters in the novel, some more than others. In the poem Courage by Edgar Albert Guest, the author is talking about how courage is not a thing that comes easy, it's deep down in the heart or soul of a person. It's a daily part of everyone's life even if they may not realize it. The author wrote “ “It's a slow, unwavering, ingrained trait. / With patience to work and the strength to wait /… Its part of him when he has work to do. / The brave man never freed of it. / He has it when there is no need of it.” ( 3-8) In this direct quote from the poem, it shows that courage as a trait, takes a lot of time to fully develop. The author talks about how having courage is a part of everyone, but it’s more present in people's heart and soul then they realize. There can be actions showcasing true courage to appear, and those actions come to define the person as fearless and brave. In the article Malala Yousafzai- Biographical by the Nobel Foundation, Malala was a girl who lived in the Pakistan but her community had changed very drastically. The Taliban began to start to control the Swat Valley forcefully. One of the major conflicts was that girls were banned from attending school and doing cultural activities, basically giving up their rights on what they want to do. Malala was very angry and upset that she stated showcasing her opinion on social media, saying that she will have courage and stand up to the Talibans. Based on the article it states “ On her return, after weeks of being away from Swat, Malala once again used the media and continued her pubic campaign for her right to go to school...she and her father became known throughout Pakistan for their determination to give Pakistani girls access to a free quality education.” In this time of what seems to be political views forced on everyone, Malala doesn't stop fighting in what she believes in . She thinks that if she can stop the Taliban, she can help many other girls who are lost in this situation too. It's tough in her situation to be so strong and courageous even with a shot to her head. She takes the experiences and makes them into goals she needs to achieve and teach other people how to do the same thing. It was very risky for Malala
