Courage is a characteristic that many people in our world lack. It is the strength to continue persevering while withstanding the difficulties, danger, and fear that may come with it. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the readers meet a family, the Finch family who are living in the 1930s. The book takes course in the span of about three years where the readers get to learn about the family as their father Atticus, took on a difficult court case. The most prevalent theme throughout the course of the novel is surely courage and is shown when Jem was ordered to read to Mrs.Dubose, when Atticus took on the Tom Robinsion case, and lastly when a neighbor of the Finch family, Boo Radley saved the children from almost being killed. At the beginning of the book, Jem was ten years old and walking down the street when he heard one of his neighbors, Mrs.Dubose make a comment concerning the case Jem’s father, Atticus had just been appointed to. Out of anger, Jem took his baton and destroyed her Camellia bushes in the front of her house. In return, she requested that he read to her which Atticus made sure Jem did. When Jem had first went to read to her, he realized that she had been very sick. In manifestation, the house was very messy. As Jem began reading he noticed that only half of her face was shown with the rest of her body hidden under the covers. However, he had later learned that Mrs.Dubose had been struggling with a morphine addiction. Her one goal was to pass away drug free and to achieve that goal, she worked very hard, despite the pain she encountered. Later, Jem realizes how strong Mrs.Dubose actually was. After her death, Atticus told Jem, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 149). Therefore Atticus was so adamant about Jem reading to her so that he could see courage and compassion first hand. Despite the heavily racist town he lived in, he being a white man still defended Tom Robinson, a black male in court. Tom was accused of raping a women. Usually cases involving a person of color were handed off to a lawyer with less experience because the cases were a lost cause. Atticus had een given this case and decided he wanted to go through with it and fight as hard as if it were any other case, if not harder. He did this even while knowing that the town was not going to support him or his family, resulting in them getting constantly mis treated or rude comments concerning the case. To illustrate, in school, a classmate had said something rude to Scout, causing her to punch him out of anger. After she had done this, Atticus told her “you might hear some ugly talk in school but do one thing for me if you will, you just hold your head high and keep those fists down” (Lee 10). At the end of the day, although Atticus and his family did not have the support from the community, they continued to see the case to the end because it was the right thing to
