Parenting is a hard concept that many do not understand, and not everyone knows how to be good parents. Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates the characteristic of being a good and fair parent. A good and fair parent isn’t biased in any way. They don’t listen to prejudice or are racist in any way. They teach their kids right from wrong, and make sure they learn to do the right thing. Atticus always listened to everyone before making a final decision, he didn’t just listen to the more superior person. Also, he didn’t let the rest of the community stop him from defending a black man, even though in that era there was a lot of prejudice. Every time Atticus’s daughter, Scout, came to him for help, he always gave her the right advice. Atticus repeatedly demonstrated that he didn’t give into prejudice, was fair and always taught right from wrong. Atticus demonstrates this when every time scout gets into a fight with someone. He listens to both sides of the story before putting the blame on anyone. For example, when Francis was harassing scout and she punches him, she gets in trouble with Uncle Jack, but he didn’t even listen to what scout had to say. As scout says in chapter 9, “When Jem an ‘I fuss Atticus doesn’t ever just listen to Jem’s side of it, he hears mine too.” Atticus, on the other hand listened. That’s why at the end of the chapter Uncle Jack says that he doesn’t want children, because he doesn’t have the characteristics like Atticus. This shows that he is fair because he Listened to both sides of the story and then decided what was right. Also, he wasn’t being one-sided or biased like everyone else in the house. By being fair to everyone equally Atticus demonstrates the characteristics of a good parent along with that he also shows that he doesn’t give into
