Throughout Part 1 of Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, published in 1960, we see many recurring themes, three of which are most prevalent. These are: the battles between good and evil, social inequality and how it affects different types of characters, and education. This best-selling novel is a story about the lives of an American family, the Finches, and the problems that they encounter. It is written in the narrative voice of Jean Louise Finch, or more commonly referred to by her nickname, Scout.

Showing the complicated mixture of good and bad citizens. An example of almost complete good is Atticus Finch (Scouts father), the successful lawyer. He has portrayed the theme of good through his formal manner and by guiding Scout and Jem to be better. Another example of good is a character named Boo Radley. Though it seems as if he is the bad one, by his bad reputation, he is a representation of the goodness that every human being has, for example, Boo leaves scout and Jem presents inside the hollow part, another example of good is when Jem gets his pants stuck on the fence of his house and rips it, Boo mends it and leaves it on the fence of Jem’s house. [Scout] "You do an' I'll wake up Atticus." [Jem] "You do and I'll kill you." However, very mysteriously, when Jem goes back to get his pants, he finds them neatly folded, as if somebody had touched them; [Jem] "There's something I didn't tell you.'" (To kill A Mocking Bird, ch.8). an example of evil is shown through Bob Ewell, a young boy that treats others badly and expects for everyone else to treat him good. An example of his evilness is shown when he offends Miss Caroline (Scouts teacher) and makes her cry. This theme of evil depicts the mistreatment and unjust behavior that was occurring in the 60’s.
