Humility, one of the best virtues to have, gets used in many characters. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee valued humility and incorporated it into the positive characters of the book. She showed many people with non who acted like fools. Then she also had many characters who demonstrated it. She displayed the value of having humility and some of the best characters known for it today come from her book. Though many people acted stuck up and snooty in To Kill a Mockingbird, the character of Atticus, Calpurnia and Miss Maddie showed great humility.
To begin with, Atticus displayed humility in every aspect of his life. Harper Lee portrayed Atticus with great wisdom, strength and courage yet he modestly kept these things to himself so that his children sometimes saw him as weak or old. He did not like to show off and tried to teach his kids this lesson in their lives. In one part of the story, just before Mr. Tate told Jem and Scout how great their father was, Atticus says, “Hush Heck, let’s go back to town” (129). This sentence demonstrated how Atticus did not want to receive attention and applause, even though he had done something amazing. With many other examples, Atticus clearly showed that he believed in humility.

Throughout the book Miss Maddie popped up and just seems like a quiet old woman. Then she would tell Jem or Scot something very wise and this portrayed that she was a smart person although very humble about it. After the trial, Jem accused the people of Maycomb she exclaimed, “Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident?” (289).
