Frye Honors English 1 2 March 2023 The Impact of Society in To Kill a Mockingbird To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book about a young girl scout, and her family living in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. Scout and her brother Jem experience and learn about prejudice, racism, and how good and evil can coexist within a single individual or community. The society of Maycomb greatly affected the people of the town. Society shaped and influenced people all across Maycomb starting with scout herself, Mr. Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley(Arthur Radley). Boo was looked at as the monster of Maycomb, ever since he was a young boy there had been multiple stories made up about him. He was the gossip of town most of the time, having he never came out of the house. For example, during cold weather, if flowers freeze it is because Boo breathed on them. Boo is also credited for some smaller crimes that take place in Maycomb. It is believed that pecans that fall from the trees on Radley property will cause death, and if a ball ever lands in the Radley's yard it is lost forever. Jem also believes that Boo eats raw animals and has yellow teeth. These false accusations have left Boo Radley with eyes constantly on him and always being the gossip of the town, when the poor man does nothing. Boo stays inside the house due to this gossip, never coming out. Although the Book never came out of the house, from his house he could see the whole town. He could see all the bad of this town and what was going on. Scout and Jem also impacted him enough for Boo to come and save the children from Bob Ewell when they were attacked. Also when Miss. Maudie's house caught on fire and the whole town was helping, Boo had placed a blanket on Scout, and Scout had a big enough impact for Boo to come out when the whole town was surrounding Ms. Maudies and made sure she wasn't
