Micah Godoy English 9H August 9, 2023 To Kill A Mockingbird Written Character Ana In the classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jeremy Atticus Finch is empathetic, responsible, and brave. Jem Finch is the son of Atticus Finch, an attorney in Maycomb, Alabama and the brother of Jean Louise (Scout) Finch. At the beginning of the book, Scout narrates Jem as a ten year old boy with pale skin and brown soapy hair. He was seen as childish but grew into a responsible young man with a sense of maturity. He strongly looks up to his father and plans to follow his career path of law. Jem undergoes a series of conflicts in the book, as he hadn’t been exposed into the real world yet. He illustrates different kinds of bravery as he gets older. Jem’s shows bravery as a little boy when Dill dares him to touch the Radley’s house, even if it was described as morbid. Chapter 1 states, “In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare.” Jem is courageous when a group of men approach Atticus at the jail. He refuses to leave his and has a desire to keep his father safe. In chapter 15, page 173, “‘All right, Mr. Finch, get ‘em oua here,’ someone growled. In the midst of this strange assembly, Atticus stood trying to make Jem mind him. ‘I ain’t going,’ was his steady answer to Atticus’s threats.” With all these threats, Jem was still assertive on staying, exhibiting great bravery. In chapter 27, Jem and Scout are being followed home, “We were nearly to the road when I felt Jem’s hand leave me, felt him jerk backwards to the ground. More scuffling, and there came a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed.” In this moment of raw fear, Jem puts Scout over himself, saving her life and leaving himself injured.
