Doing right can lead to consequences
The scorching hot sun blazed on the two children who were having a standoff. “Nixxer-Lover” Francis, Scout’s cousin, whispered. Scout’s fist smashed into his mouth, but it was only a matter of time before she got into trouble with her Uncle because of it. Why was Scout the only one punished? In fact, why did she get punished at all when her cousin was the one bad mouthing her family? Sometimes what is right is not always fun or pleasing to others. Sometimes you can get hated on, hurt or be required to make sacrifices. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper E. Scout was a strong-headed tough girl, but she was also kindhearted and is seen throughout the book to almost never fight without a reason. When her cousin, Francis Hancock provokes her, she simply can not hold back. Francis had called Attius a, “Nixxer-lover” and told Scout that Atticus would be the ruin of the family. When Scout let fly though, she was restrained and punished. It seemed like she got in trouble with adults the most. On her first day of school, a classmate named Walter Cunningham didn’t bring his lunch. He was from a Cunningham family, who were poor, but never took what they couldn’t give back. When Miss. Caroline, their first grade teacher, insisted on giving him a nickel to buy himself lunch, Scout stands up for him. ‘“You’re shaming him Miss. Caroline.”’ Scout said outright. At this, Miss. Caroline gets enraged and pulls Scout by the collar to her desk. ‘“Jean Louis, I’ve had enough of you this morning.”’ She says and gives her a slight beating. Although Scout’s intentions were for Miss. Caroline to understand that she was shaming Walter. Scout gets punished unreasonably. Scout’s way of bringing justice was not ideal, but she had done it for the sake of others, and often got punished for
