The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee follows the childhood of Scout Finch. Scout grew up living in Maycomb, Alabama along with her brother Jem and her father Atticus. In the midst of her childhood Atticus was called upon to represent Tom Robinson, a black man living in Maycomb who was accused of raping a girl named Mayella Ewell. During this time Scout and her family had many hardships due to the towns criticism while doing the right thing and helping an innocent man. In the novel, Harper Lees’ use of tone helped to develop the central idea, which is the importance of having a moral compass.

Atticus shows the most courage in the book but all three of these characters show true courage in some way, shape, or form. Boo Radley showed a lot of courage, but he was not in the storyline as much as Atticus. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, courage is defined as standing up for people and doing what’s right.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem believe Maycomb is Unjust because The Maycomb he used to know is not like what it is now, Which is shown when the prejudice members of his community are against Tom, Lula refusing to let Jem & Scout enter their church, and When he was punished for destroying Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. To Start Off, Scout was explaining on how the final verdict of the jury & judge affected Jem & loss faith in the citizens of Maycomb. Scout says, “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: “Guilty...guilty...guilty...guilty…” I peeked at Jem: his hands were white from gripping the balcony rail, and his shoulders jerked as if each “guilty” was a separate stab between them” (282). Maycomb is an injustice town because as every time the Jury said “guilty” it negatively affected Jem like he was being stab inside which illustrates how he was very confident in knowing that Tom will be acquitted & be found innocent but, after the verdict it had made realizes & lose hope on the members of his community.
Most authors write about characters that can be related to by the reader. To make readers able to connect more, the author has to make the character more realistic which means giving a character a flaw. The following books, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Odyssey and Of Mice and Men, are books we focused on this year and they all represented characters with flaws that the readers were able to identify and relate to. Boo Radley, Odysseus and Lennie were characters in the books that have flaws, but have good intentions. To Kill A Mockingbird, is a book that focuses on a town that faces racism.

Scout grows up in a town named after her family as she guides readers through a complex plot filled with hope, lies, family, racism, and love. Lee starts off writing as Scout trying to navigate her way through 2nd grade. It starts off amiable, as the author introduces the characters, properly depicting different voices and personalities.
The mockingbird represents Boo Radley, Atticus, Tom Robinson, and innocence. “…remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird” (LEE 90). This quote supports the symbolism because the innocent are “killed” and “kept in jail” for no valid reason. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.
To Kill a Mockingbird is relevant in today’s generation because the novel shows how one can learn and mature through experiences. To begin, the character Scout evolved vastly throughout the length of the novel. When the novel began, she would overreact to small unnecessary things within the novel, for example she thought that their cook Calpurnia favoured her brother; Scout said to her father, “Lose no time in packing her off”, (Lee 33). This demonstrates to the reader that she is a childish little girl. As well, she is also very naïve and believes everything people told her, perhaps not understanding the other side’s point of view within the story.

The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” deals with a post reconstruction era in the south, and the effects of racism in the court system, with the main protagonist Scout dealing with the effect of the town lawyer and her father, Atticus dealing with this racism when he is asked to defend an African American man for raping a white woman. Through the actions of Mrs. Dubose, Judge Taylor, Tom Robinson, and Atticus the town lawyer , it is demonstrated that it is worth taking a stand for oneself,and for others as well. It is worth taking a stand for yourself, in fact, it goes against the golden rule which states that doing not doing bad to others is what you should do, because you are giving yourself the hard time, when you know that you have a chance of stopping it, which makes you a bad person.
