“Literary devices, Literary devices everywhere!” How do you think Harper Lee shows the reader moral courage within the novel To Kill a Mockingbird? Literary devices are the one of the key things that can reveal secrets or explain the plot of the story. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee. She based this story from The Scottsboro Trials; which is a trial that is about discrimination and racism against blacks who was convicted without evidence or a fair trial exactly what the author explains in To Kill a Mockingbird. In this story, Harper Lee uses various types of literary devices within her novel and two main ones she makes use of both setting and conflict. Conflict is the struggle /clash between opposing characters forces or emotions. A conflict could be found when the Tom Robinson Trial comes up. “ You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger; I see that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella. (Harper 163& 173) This explains how Atticus knew what would happen if he was going to help Tom Robinson the society would judge his actions/ decision and his kids would be made fun of; known as man versus society. Atticus knew what he was doing but did not care what people thought. Maycomb being both full of conformist and small leading to the judgement of the one person in town that would end up being the non-conformist and don’t care about comments from others; Atticus could have said no,but he did not. Next, would be when Arthur Radley(“Boo”) kills Bob Ewell. “ Bob Ewell’s lyin on the ground under that tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck up under his ribs he’s dead Mr. Finch. (Harper 266) This supports the topic because first Bob Ewell made the decision to try to harm Jem and Scout that was his decision, and it was Arthur(“Boo”) Radley’s rash decision to kill Bob Ewell. Clearly, these are showing a great example of moral courage. Harper Lee knew that conflict would pull out more examples of moral courage especially when there is a conflict and the characters would have to make difficult
