The Poor Family Laughing at poor people is unreasonable. They must have done something that could change their lives. Then why are there people still laughing at those who are brave enough to make the choice? In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, A story about Scout, a girl who lived in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the Author, Harper Lee, used the character of Walter Cunningham to introduce the theme “Don’t judge others with their wealth.” First, the poorest characters in this story are probably the Cunninghams. They have no money to buy their son lunches at school. For example, from page 26 of the book, when they are at lunchtime in school, Scout said, “He didn’t forget his lunch, he didn’t have any. From page 32 of the book, when Walter came to Scout’s house for lunch, “‘But he’s gone and drowned his dinner in syrup,’ I protested. ‘He’s poured it all over—’” (Lee 32) This quote had pointed out that Scout really thinks everyone eat like they do. So she was kind of laughing at him when Walter is pouring the syrup on his dinner, because in her memory, no one had ever poured syrup like this. This is her prejudice on Walter, “You're really stupid that you don't know how to eat with syrup. That's why you're a Cunningham." Another prejudice that Scout is having can be seen from page 33 of the book, when Calpurnia got mad at Scout, "He ain't company, Cal, he's just a Cunningham—" At this point, Scout used "Just." This can be seen as Scout doesn't really think the Cunninghams are not on the same level as she is. So this is another prejudice Scout had, "the Cunninghams are low." Base on these two points, I can said that Scout is having prejudice on Walter, and is connected to the theme "Don't judge others with their
