Angelina Jolie once said, “ I do believe in the old saying, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity.” Angelina Jolie explains in this quote that our daily experiences are what shapes us into the people we are today. We can develop positive and sometimes even negative traits from the experiences that we encounter. An example of this is shown in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is the story of her growth and maturity through empathy. Today we also see many stories of growth and maturity through harsh experiences for example on February 14, 2018 17 people, students and teachers, were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida. Now, the survivors of the shooting are taking a stand against gun control in honor of their fallen classmates and teachers. Literature, such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, helps us to better understand the different ways that we can grow and mature in order to view our world in a whole new way.
