In this quote, by Jem Finch, we see that Jem is growing up and starting to see things from other people's point of view. Jem is about 12 years old. Although it has only been 2 years since the beginning of the book, you can see how mature Jem is getting from his actions and words. This quote stands as one of the main themes of the book, To Kill A Mockingbird. Jem is only a little boy. He and Scout both see things as they are, and lack understanding. Atticus really wants to stress to them that you must understand a person for what they have gone through, and what has happened. You can’t make sense of a person just by their actions and words; you must dig deeper. This part of the quote teaches us that you can’t judge the book by its cover. Secondly, this quote gives the reader a glimpse of Atticus’ caring personality. It is kind of hard to understand Atticus during the book because he keeps to himself and hides many of his feelings. This shows the reader that he is willing to be ridiculed, humiliated, and spat at for poor Mayella Ewell. She doesn’t have a very supporting family. Atticus can tell that she is nothing but trash in her home. He takes chances with her father just so that she can have little peace for a bit. You see that he feels sorry for Mayella, a young girl that doesn’t mind him being made fun of. For a fact, I know that I could not be as caring as Atticus in his situation. I would really love to be Mr. Ewell’s worst nightmare. I would want to spit right back in his face and tell him what he has coming.
