In this novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird is relevant today than they were half a century ago. It highlights instances of heroism and courage in a small Alabama town that went through poverty and had racial tensions in the South.
These themes continue to be relevant today. All we have to do is look around us and we can see that it still exist. It also brings up very controversial topics that were around in the 1960’s and some are still around. The novels major theme is prejudice and racism and during the time this issue was very big and the civil rights movement was getting under way. Miss Maudie's quote: "Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (chapter 10) is reflected in several of the characters throughout the story. With the character, Boo Radley is innocent but he was the neighborhood gossip and feared by people but turned out to be the hero at the end of the novel, and Tom Robinson is innocent and yet he is convicted and eventually killed over a false rape allegation based on no evidence but the emotional woman’s word. The people of the town knew that the rape accusation was a lie, but the people chose to believe a lying white woman and her drunk, mean father over an innocent black man. These people were built upon fear and ignorance. Robinson’s innocence is clear, but it’s the color of his skin, not his actions or character, that dictates his fate. This not only speaks the brokenness of the court system at that time, but it also speaks to how strong racism was. Scout struggles with her own innocence in the novel. She realizes that the adult world around her is unfair, and racist and she grows up to understand the true nature of race relations in America. I feel there is progress in dealing with race issues but we have a long way to go. The issue of race is still very much alive today. Although it has taught us about the issues of racism, and racial injustice and how terrible it was, it has also taught us how to be better people and treat others respectfully. It is influential to today's culture, but is also a reminder of the past. It is a reminder to future generations to look at everything from an objective point of view and to remove racism. To Kill A Mockingbird very relevant, and should still be studied in classes to help students understand the problems of the past, understand the progress that has been made, and attitudes to ensure a positive future. A clear message that can be learn from reading this novel is to not judge someone by their differences and to show respect. Also standing up for one’s belief.
