The Life of a Mockingbird

Mockingbirds are a symbol of peace and innocence, yet they are treated unfairly. This is unjust and that is why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. However, in a symbolic sense, this essay will explain how characters in the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, have similar traits as mockingbirds. These characters are, Atticus, Tom Robinson, and Arthur Radley (Boo Radley).

The first mockingbird who was intimidated, was Atticus, and therefore he is first on the list. Atticus is peaceful and fair, yet he was targeted by others for defending Tom Robinson, who was a black man. Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted for raping Mayella even though he was an innocent, law abiding man. The reason Tom Robinson was charged guilty was just because he was an African-American. Mr.Underwood makes his analysis of the result of the court case. “Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts, Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” p323,Harper Lee, Mr.Underwood. Clearly, this explains the reason Tom Robinson was charged guilty which was because of the bias of the jury. The jury cannot just follow what their hearts desire, they have to be fair. Look at the evidence, the prosecution side couldn't provide one iota of evidence to prove Tom Robinson guilty. On the other side of the coin, the defendant side provided more than enough evidence to prove Tom Robinson not guilty. If Tom Robinson was a white man, he would have been freed without hesitation. However, since Tom Robinson was black, the jurors decided to punish him even though the evidence proves that he is not guilty. This was only one of the tragic cases where innocent African-Americans were charged guilty for things they didn't do just because of racism and
