In the context of childhood development, growth is defined as growth in psychological capacity. Both processes are dependent on genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors. With all that being said, the process of growth and change takes place between birth and maturity. In the novel “To kill a mockingbird” chapter 9-11 is filled with Atticus having to defend himself against the rumors going on about him, Atticus says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win." (Lee 63). Atticus is referring to the deep-rooted racism in Maycomb County, although the novel is set nearly seventy years after the abolition of slavery, prejudice against black people is still alive in America, especially in Deep South states like Alabama. Atticus is saying that racism is what has already "licked" Robinson's chances of a fair trial. Tom Robinson is considered a mockingbird because he was slaughtered for doing nothing but trying to live his life, “...There’s a black boy dead for reason” (Lee 233). In the quote when it talks about the "senseless slaughter," and the unreasonable, unjustifiable death, it relates to Tom because he is being punished for his false accusations, and it relates to an innocent mockingbird being killed.
