To Kill A Mockingbird Rough Draft “It was Jem's turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears as we made our way through the cheerful crowd. ‘It ain’t right,’ he muttered, all the way to the corner of the square where he found Atticus waiting.” (pg 284) Throughout the story To Kill a Mockingbird Jem, Scout’s older brother, matured and change a great deal. In addition, to maturing Jem became more logical. Also he now further understood the logic of racism and Maycomb. This is shown when Jem explains to Scout what a mixed child is and how they are accepted into the society of Maycomb.Another example is when Jem sat with the colored people during the trial. Most white children would not have done that. You can also see Jem's logic when he states “‘what’s a mixed child?’ ‘Half white, half colored. You’ve seen ‘em, Scout.” Also when Jem said “ They don't belong anywhere. Colored folks won't have ‘em because they’re half white; white folks won't have them ‘cause they’re colored, so they’re just in between, they don't belong anywhere.” This shows how Jem uses his logic to explain to Scout what a mixed child is. In addition to that, Jem's emotions made him feel too cool for Scout so he spends less time with her compared to the beginning of the story. Jem is being more emotional in the text when the story shows that he is crying. “It was Jem’s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears as we made through the cheerful crowd. ‘It ain't right,’ he muttered, all the way to the corner of the square where we found Atticus waiting.”(248) This shows that Jem is now showing his emotions more instead of not letting his emotions out. It also shows that Jem gets upset about the topic of Tom and what happened to
