In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the main character, Scout (aka Jean Louise Finch). The book is from her perspective which is a great insight of how she thinks. Scout is smart, a tomboy and innocent. Scout attends her first year of school, and already as a first grader she knows how to read. Miss Caroline, her teacher is angry with Scout’s advanced knowledge, and asks “if he didn’t teach you, who did?” (17) Scout wasn’t taught how to read by her father, Atticus; she was self-taught. Although Scout’s father never taught her how to read, he reads to her at night. This nightly routine helped her by follow the words as he read until she gradually learned how to read.
