The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a classic novel that revolves mainly around theme and character interaction. Theme is a very important aspect of the book because it sets up major events in the story, and connects it with the modern world. Many issues in the novel still come up today such as race. Character interaction is also very important in the book because the characters learn from each other and grow together. Theme and character interaction are two main forces in the book. This is the most important event because everything in the book leads up to this point. Also, this is where the main theme of the novel is shown. As the finch family wakes up the morning of the trial, Scout says, "Everybody's appetite was delicate this morning." When they arrive to the court, Scout says, "We knew there was a crowd, but we had not bargained for the multitudes in the first floor hallway." These quotes show the importance and magnitude of the trial. This was a huge deal and everyone was going to watch it. The trial was such a massive deal because it was extremely rare to see a white man defending an African American man in court. Also, the fact that the case was local made it even bigger because it affected many people in Maycomb. Scout shows the importance of the verdict when she says, "Guilty... guilty... guilty... guilty... I peeked at Jem: his hands were white from gripping the balcony rail, and his shoulders jerked as if each guilty was a separate stab between them." Again, this quote shows the importance of the trial, and specifically the amount riding on the verdict.
