Cruelty can be expressed in every novel to display a theme or a point. In To Kill A Mockingbird cruelty is the main function. The characters in this novel, display cruelty and judgement through racism and those who are different the the normal person. The first main example of cruelty in the novel is Tom Robinson, who is a black man accused of raping a white women.
2. At the beginning of the novel, Tom describes himself as a very tolerant man who often moves people who generally keep to themselves to open up to him without much effort. Tom prides himself on reserving his judgment of others until he takes time to observe and get to know them. The bird represents innocents and it does no harm to others. Mr. Robinson symbolized the Mockingbird because he was fated to death even when he was innocent. Also, Tom is disabled and is unable to use his left hand and arm.

Heck Tate is more of an in depth and surprisingly interesting character than you might assume in your initial read of the Pulitzer prize winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird. I assume he is so easily glossed over due to the fact that he seems to have a quite minor role in the overarching plot of the story, only being involved a few scenes at most. I, too, saw him as an unimportant or easily forgotten character as the result of the reason previously stated. Consequently, after I reviewed the events that took place that were connected to Heck Tate I realized he may not be as one dimensional as I had originally perceived. Some of the traits that presented themselves to my perspective led me to believe that Heck Tate is a cordial, lackadaisical, and carefree man.
To kill a Mockingbird- Scout To Kill A Mockingbird is a movie about The Finches, a family that is very different in a time where discrimination was a main part of their world. In Maycomb, Alabama in the early 1930s it was very rare for a southern family to not be racist, or discriminate towards anyone. The main character Scout, shows many important character traits including courage, adventurousness, and respectfulness.
In this story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee we met a new character Burris’s. From what I have gathered his attitude is terrible and his family can't be much different. Burris’s family is not complete and doesn’t care is because he has no mother and we don't even know if he has a dad. Burris’s family doesn't really care if Burris or his siblings only go to school on the first day and then skips the rest of the year and Also threatens the teacher to mark him absent. Their also poor because Burris showed up to school with lice and covered head to toe in dirt, and i'm going to assume they don't have running water.

He is being discriminated against for looking past the labels to support what 's right. Tom is nothing but a compassionate husband, and father. "
When the reader is first introduced to Tom Robinson he appears to be someone with no morals, but upon further reading it is obvious that he has quite a few. In fact Tom Robinson is also a mockingbird. Later in the book when he is in prison, after the trial is over, he is shot by a guard as he is running towards the prison fence, the reason he was doing so was because he wanted to say his final goodbye. “They shot him”, “ They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them” (268) this quote shows how someone who is portrayed as doing a bad act actually has something kind and caring deep inside for the people he is doing it for.
Tom near the beginning of the novel is portrayed as a kind person, though he might be swift to anger, he is also quite independent. Tom is more than just average or normal he shows strength, power, thoughtfulness, support and the wit or courage it takes face the next challenge. Jem and Scout Finch, characters from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, are open minded, educated, young children that have a father named Atticus Finch who tries to teach his children to have sound morals and personal values . The children have not been sheltered from life's hardships due to their father Atticus's views on parenting instead they have learned right from wrong. Atticus Finch believes that not sheltering his kids from the world allows them to form strong morals and values. Atticus Finch does what he believes will help make his children into strong citizens with outstanding values and morals.

Another symbol of a Mockingbird is the character Arthur “Boo” Radley who was isolated in his house for most of his this but is still judged by the people of Maycomb.
Ewell one day and she tried to make a move on him which made him feel uncomfortable and he ran away with out even touching her even though she was hitting him. In the court Tom was asked why he helped Mayella even though he had to get home and help his family, and he said that he just wanted to help her out because her father didn’t seem to help. This tells us that Tom is a really good guy inside and just because he’s black doesn’t mean he is a bad guy who would rape a girl. Just like Atticus Tom Robinson is a really moral person. Tom would, and does go out of his way to help others because it is the right thing to do.
