Heck Tate is more of an in depth and surprisingly interesting character than you might assume in your initial read of the Pulitzer prize winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird. I assume he is so easily glossed over due to the fact that he seems to have a quite minor role in the overarching plot of the story, only being involved a few scenes at most. I, too, saw him as an unimportant or easily forgotten character as the result of the reason previously stated. Consequently, after I reviewed the events that took place that were connected to Heck Tate I realized he may not be as one dimensional as I had originally perceived. Some of the traits that presented themselves to my perspective led me to believe that Heck Tate is a cordial, lackadaisical, and carefree man.
In this story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee we met a new character Burris’s. From what I have gathered his attitude is terrible and his family can't be much different. Burris’s family is not complete and doesn’t care is because he has no mother and we don't even know if he has a dad. Burris’s family doesn't really care if Burris or his siblings only go to school on the first day and then skips the rest of the year and Also threatens the teacher to mark him absent. Their also poor because Burris showed up to school with lice and covered head to toe in dirt, and i'm going to assume they don't have running water.

When the reader is first introduced to Tom Robinson he appears to be someone with no morals, but upon further reading it is obvious that he has quite a few. In fact Tom Robinson is also a mockingbird. Later in the book when he is in prison, after the trial is over, he is shot by a guard as he is running towards the prison fence, the reason he was doing so was because he wanted to say his final goodbye. “They shot him”, “ They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them” (268) this quote shows how someone who is portrayed as doing a bad act actually has something kind and caring deep inside for the people he is doing it for.

This tells us that Tom is a really good guy inside and just because he’s black doesn’t mean he is a bad guy who would rape a girl. Just like Atticus Tom Robinson is a really moral person. Tom would, and does go out of his way to help others because it is the right thing to do.
