George Orwell was born in India into a richer middle-class family. Although we refer to this famous writer as Orwell, his actual name was Eric Arthur Blair. Orwell had two sisters, Marjorie and Avril, and his mother's name was Mabel Née Limouzin. However, he rarely saw his father, Richard Walmesley Blair, until 1912 when he retired from being an opium agent in the Indian Civil Service. A year after Orwell was born he and his mother moved to England and his father would join them in 1912. At the age of 7, Orwell attended a school called St. Cyprian's School of Sussex. Additionally, this school began to shape Orwell's beliefs on authoritative figures, as the school was built on corporal punishment and he was beaten regularly. As his anger grew, so did his longing to become a writer. Eventually, Orwell resigned from the Indian Civil Service and moved to Paris in order to pursue a career in short stories. His reaction to authorities resulted in novels like To Shoot an Elephant and A Hanging. However, even though he began creating stories, his freelance writing lifestyle resulted in his constant search for common jobs in order to survive. Due to the fact that Orwell was struggling to recover in this type of environment, in 1929 Orwell moved back to England to live in East London. It was at this time when Eric Arthur Blair adopted the pseudonym George Orwell, partially to ensure his families status remained honorable, as they were embarrassed by Orwell’s living conditions.His move and experience in different classes sparked an interest in the different living conditions in the classes.
