Many immigrants coming into the United States think they will immediately thrive after arriving. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Many factors can prevent people from thriving. Did you know Nicki Minaj is an immigrant? She moved with her parents to Queens, NY at the age of 5. Also, did you know that most of Queens, NY is a food desert? People have little to no access to healthy foods and grocery stores, other than bodegas with unhealthy dishes and snacks. Just like Nicki, many immigrants live in food deserts. With heavily enforced regulations and support, densely immigrant-populated areas, especially those lacking experience, will not suffer from food deserts. This quote is important because it demonstrates that due to financial constraints, individuals are compelled to purchase processed and fast food, potentially leading to long-term health repercussions. This article also mentions “The neighborhoods where refugees and immigrants live often lack full-service grocery stores, forcing people to shop at gas stations and convenience stores that don’t stock much healthy food.” In other words, many immigrants live in places with little to no access to grocery stores and are obligated to eat processed and fast food from convenience stores or fast food restaurants.
