In Search of Our Roses
One of the wisest men who governed the United States once proclaimed, “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” President Abraham Lincoln was right. As humans, we tend to regard ourselves inadequately, seeing the accumulation of thorns in our life, and passing over the true beauty and worth of the roses within.
This world gives us many opportunities to tell ourselves that we’re a worthless failure, with no hope or a future. Thankfully, there is another way we can look at ourselves. Positively. People want to have value. It’s in our human nature to want to be loved, and accepted as who we are. Sometimes though, it seems that no matter what we do in life, it isn’t enough to make us feel like we have worth. Even when people are living in a paradisiacal type of life, with their accomplishments and social status flourishing, they still find themselves in search of self worth.
What is the main determiner if you have worth? Does it depend on the stuff you have, your monetary stability, and your success? If this is true, then what about the people worldwide who live off of less than two dollars a day? What does that make the average family in the United States? How about you? Does your life have value? If our value is based on our status in this world, our financial wealth, and our accomplishments, how are we going to live up to those requirements? Most of us are not always born into a wealthy family. We’re not born with a sense of self worth either. It doesn’t come naturally, we have to find it.
