1. Yes I do think sporting events contribute to unifying a nation because it brings people of different races, religions, ages, different towns and provinces together in order to host a sporting event, such as the 2010 FIFA world cup. Also, everyone comes together to celebrate an individual’success whilst that individual is representing their country, athletes like chad le Clos. A prime example of a sporting event unifying a nation is the rugby world cup in 1995; where Mandela handed the trophy over to Francois Pienaar ultimately breaking the racial boundaries brought by the apartheid and unifying the country.

Mandela coming to the rugby world cup a typical Afrikaners sports wearing the springbok top with the number six on the springbok jersey, the number of the white Afrikaner captain Francois Pienaar wishes the players good luck before the game and handing over the trophy to Francois Pienaar at the end of the match unified the country. It was another symbol that apartheid has ended and that everyone in the South Africa is equal no matter your skin colour. The action by Mandela at the rugby world cup in 1995 allowed the country to move on from the past and start becoming one unified nation, the rainbow nation. The world cup also created a unified atmosphere in South Africa. People came from all parts of South Africa, different races, religions and ages to support the South African soccer team Bafana Bafana. To celebrate the success of the team and to get behind the team. The world cup also created a unified atmosphere because everyone in the country came together and worked together to host one of the most successful FIFA world cups the world has witness. People were proud to be South African and people respected one another which brought the nation closer together.
