The American Dream, the nation’s symbol, has been a major part of American society and culture. The phrase that may cause you to picture white picket fences, safety and shelter. You may have heard that with hard work, determination, and a bit of luck, the American Dream promises success and prosperity to everyone, despite their background. The question remains, is the American Dream truly ideals you want to live by, or is it just a myth that sustains social inequality? By understanding the American Dream and the impact it has on society, there is more to be learned of the great gap between the rich and poor.

The high costs of education, housing, and healthcare with a low wage and unstable job markets make it difficult for one to reach financial stability. The wage gap between the rich and poor also contributes to why the American Dream is out of reach for those who are less fortunate. While the American Dream is the belief that anyone can be successful with hard work. But, in a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, it becomes more difficult to invest money into something you’d love when you’re nearly making enough to scrape by. The widening gap means that the more fortunate have better access to resources. They may get better education, jobs with higher pay, and enough money to invest for their future. While people with a short end of the stick, not only can’t acquire those things, it can also have a mental impact on people. It can make the individual hopeless or feel defeated. Racial discrimination is an ongoing issue all around the world. Throughout U.S. history, African-American citizens have always been seen as inferior to whites. They were denied jobs, and even if they got one, they would be paid significantly less than a white person. Although we have progressed greatly since that time, there are still companies who discriminate against people based on the color of their skin. Though there are laws against discrimination, you can never govern someone’s mind. Women were also treated unfairly when it came to jobs. The wage gap between men and women still exists today and is still heavily protested. Ableism is still a major issue in the job industry.
