Was Andrew Carnegie A Hero?
Andrew Carnegie was seen as an influential leader, but was he a hero? Andrew Carnegie was born on November 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland in the attic of his family's cottage. The three characteristics of a hero are courage, integrity, and concern for others. Andrew Carnegie was a hero in these three areas of his life: wealth, community, and his ambitious state of mind.
The first area in which Andrew Carnegie was he started as a blue collar worker and worked his way up the ‘workforce ladder’. When Andrew was just twelve years old he started working at a textile mill 12 hours a day for only $1.20 a week just so his family could eat and have shelter. Once he was sixteen Andrew was famous for being able to decode dot-dot dash-dash messages (morse code) and was paid $4.00 a week. In 1872 Andrew met Henry Bessemer, the creator of the steel mill, Andrew decided to adopt Bessemer's idea and bring the steel mill to the United States. This would be Called the J. Edgar Thomson Works (Pre-DBQ). This evidence helps explain why Andrew Carnegie was a hero because he had the courage to work hard to get to where he was at the nearing end of his life.
