Does it ever concern that there are places in the world where there is only one person in charge and they don’t do anything to help the lower classes? All three books that we read in class have an individual or an elite group in charge, resulting in negative outcomes. The Night was the first book that we read in class but the last one in chronological order. It is a true story about a boy named Eliezer and his dad as they go through different concentration camps during World War II. The second book that we read in class was The Crucible, the first book in chronological order. This was about the Salem witch trials and how communism was affecting society in America. This event was the trial on whether or not a black man had raped a white teenage girl. In the book the trial focuses on the characters Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell. Another character, Atticus, was Tom's defense attorney; he also played a major role in the trial. Both, Mayella and Bob Ewell, her dad, testified that Tom Robinson raped Mayella. This accusation caused there to be a sense of fear for the people of color in the town of Maycomb because they realized that even a good man, like Tom, could be accused of a horrific crime. In the trial, Mayella stated that one day she had asked Tom to chop up a chiffarobe for her then offered him a nickel for the work. She then said that after she had gone inside to get the nickel she turned around and Tom was right there and jumped on top of her. She also stated that Tom had hit her but after Atticus asked her again she said she couldn’t remember; however, when Atticus asked her a third time, she again stated that Tom had hit her. Tom stated during his testimony that after he chopped up the chiffarobe Mayella asked him to come inside to fix a door. When Tom went inside to fix the door he saw nothing wrong with the door. Tom then was going to leave but Mayella said that she could use his help getting a box off the top of a tall chiffarobe. As he was getting the box off the chiffarobe Mayella grabbed his legs and he got scared so he jumped off the chair. She then kind of jumped and hugged him. She also kissed him. She wanted Tom to kiss her back but Tom didn't want to do that. He was only worried about getting her off of him without hurting her because he knew the consequences if he was to hurt her. Most of the people in the town didn't like black people because they believed that they were less of a person and that they couldn’t be trusted.
