In this excerpt from "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle" (1781) by Tobias Smollett, Peregrine Pickle and Godfrey Gauntlet refrain from expressing hostility towards one another in an intense disagreement about Pickle's relationship with Gauntlets's sister, Emilia. Although the disagreement between the men ultimately led to a sword fight, the men's actions and internal thoughts were limited, in order to preserve their honor as it was expected of them to be respectable and honorable men during this time period. The text emphasized the fact that Gauntlet was a soldier, portraying him as poor and of lower social ranking. Even though Gauntlet was of lower class in society, he was looked upon in the army as an expert swordsman. Gauntlet referred to Pickle as "youth" due to the fact that he had no experience in swordsmanship, but he was confident that he could defeat Gauntlet because he was of lower social ranking. The men quarreled by sword with equal ferocity, with Gauntlet being the first to draw blood from his opponent. Pickle, enraged at the sight of his own blood began to fight without thought or experience. Gauntlet snapped Pickle's sword into two, putting himself at the mercy of a man who be believed was beneath him. Rather than finishing him, Gauntlet "put up his Toledo with great deliberation" like he was used to such victories. Gauntlet showing Pickle mercy made him the honorable and respected man.
