When one reads the Lord of the Rings trilogy, one will find an almost overwhelming sense of evil and darkness. Indeed, one might say that the entire book is filled with an overabundance of death mayhem. Was this the intention of J. R. Tolkien when he created this enduring trilogy, what helped shape his imagination? Many children around the world have read novels of fantasy, adventure, peace, war, and heroes. Many of his personal experiences are fused through-out the books; seen in the thoughts and feelings of the characters, and in the places, they encounter. as a veteran of World War I, Tolkien could take the experiences he personally faced and re-create them into the scenes, characters, and atmosphere in his books. One might even say there is an element of hope that can be derived from the pages of these books. Tolkien's books and literary style also influenced future authors and created a different kind of science fiction for them to follow. But is there any redemptive properties to this tail? Could these books connect people who are living in an evil filled world, to a hope that could eventually end the evil in this real world? When reading the series from Tolkien’s friend and contemporary writer C. S. Lewis, the message of hope is rung clearly for all to see in the character of Aslan the King over all kings. Where in the story of Middle Earth does hope ring? The very last book of the series is named “Return of the King”. In the book evil comes to a head, horrid battles are fought and the rightful king is placed on the throne after he has crushed the
