Two of the main characters, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, are wealthy and have everything they could want or need, yet they are still unhappy. Tom cheated on Daisy within the first week of their marriage, leaving Daisy to feel slightly alone. The couple is filled with drama and are constantly creating messes that they refuse to clean up. Towards the end of the novel, Fitzgerald wrote “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and then retreated into their money and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” Tom and Daisy were so wealthy that it was easy for them to ruin things and hide in their riches. He was born to a poor family and lived on a farm for his entire childhood. Gatsby always thought that he was entitled to everything luxurious and grand. He thought himself to be better than everyone else, so in turn, he believed he deserved the best of the best. In search of a better life, Gatsby ran away from home and changed his name. While on his search for the perfect life, Gatsby meets a girl named Daisy. Daisy and Gatsby fall deeply in love with each other, but they are separated when Gatsby goes to fight in the war. In the five years he is gone, Daisy falls in love and marries another man, Tom. Gatsby finds this fact out and decides he will become rich enough so that Daisy will want to leave Tom for him. He illegally earns his money and purchases a large house across the bay from the Buchanan’s house. Gatsby throws lavish parties every night because he holds onto the hope that Daisy still loves him. Fitzgerald wrote this conversation between Nick and Gatsby “‘You can’t repeat the past.’ ‘Can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’” Which gives the audience a clear sense of Gatsby’s wishful thinking.
