Women played a key role in the war, many women risk their lives and serve in the military, “Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs became the first women to fly American military aircraft. They ferried planes from factories to bases, transporting cargo and participating in simulation strafing and target missions” (History.com). For the time in American history women was doing other thing in the military. Many women enjoy their jobs during World War 2 because it was new opportunity and many were excited because they helping with the war effort. Even if the revolution of the United States against the colonial Great Britain gave them more consideration among the society especially regarding the education of their children with the republican motherhood aspect, women were not equal to men and they were totally dependent of their husband for their entire life. Then, the civil war appeared in April 1861; during this war, which is considered as the bloodiest war of the American history, women were really involved and contributed a lot to help soldiers both of the confederated and of the union side. Some women engaged herself as nurse and gave care to the soldiers. Other tried to collect funds in order to provide food, uniforms and other things the soldiers needed.
Although women were not aloud in the military, some were given the opportunity to become spies or even secret soldiers. These female soldiers disguised themselves as men by cutting their hair and adopting masculine names. Many of them joined due to lack of money, food, and protection. Some women were even able to serve for years before being discovered, as most were. A few famous secret soldiers who served in the army during the Revolutionary war were, Deborah Sampson and Ann Bailey who were both discovered, but that didn’t stop them for fighting for what they believed
Women were well suited for providing nourishment and necessities for the army due to their skills obtained by their accustomed housework. “...the American army often recruited the many female camp followers to fill these jobs” (Brooks 2013, para. 17). They had slowly began to achieve recognition in society, especially war. It was then, that woman had begun to silently “protest” on having the same equal opportunity as men.
