Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece of literature “The Great Gatsby”, the eponymous character is shown to be an eccentric man with a shrouded past, which only becomes revealed to the reader in the final third portion of the book. Through his past, and many other subtleties laced into the book by Fitzgerald, it is heavily hinted at that Gatsby himself is African-American, being pale enough to pass as a white man in West Egg. The inklings of this idea are planted through this novel, both overt and symbolic, such as the geography laid out by Fitzgerald and characters’ placement in that, character interactions between Gatsby and harsh racists like Tom Buchanan, and Gatsby’s past that got him to West Egg and found him his fortune. Gatsby being black was a very hidden yet powerful statement by Fitzgerald on the upward mobility of African-Americans during the 1920’s when racism and racial violence were becoming extremely prevalent, and the lengths these people had to go to to achieve that mobility, with no guaranteed success.

The readers see how Nick’s first impression of Daisy as an angel turns into describing her as a “careless” woman. Tom and Daisy are manipulative, greedy people who cause whatever destruction they want because they know their money will protect them. They move to one place just to move soon later after ruining people's’ lives. They moved several times when Tom’s affairs went wrong, and they fled the city when Myrtle was killed. Through Nick, the readers see first-hand the effect the Buchanans have on the other characters.

This paper will examine both sides of the net neutrality debate in which the content of this paper will explore both the pro and cons of net neutrality. At the end of the paper I will reveal my true thoughts about net neutrality and will discuss what I have learned about this issue in the process. Wealth is not just brought up in the story about the wealthy. The story shows aspects of the people who are born into wealth and the people reaching for it.
Tom's “supercilious” manner stems from the perceived power he uses to manipulate others. However, Tom's behavior traces back to his obsession with material possessions. For instance, when Nick visits the Buchanan residence for the first time, he describes Tom's home as a "factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy" (9). This description highlights how Tom's opulent lifestyle is meant to impress others as if he tries to create an image based on power and wealth rather than character. Nick’s description of his house as an imitation implies that it lacks any genuine substance, and is merely a superficial display of wealth.
When Nick describes Tom, it is showing a sign of cruelty. Nick describes Tom by saying, “Two shining, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward” (9). Here Nick is describing how Tom Buchanan changed from when they both attended college together. In college, Tom was very friendly and was wonderful to be around. Nick realized, when they met again, that Tom had changed from friendly to cruel in the years after Tom and Nick graduated from Yale.
Every story has a character that stands out. Tom Buchanan is an example of a character stands out for the wrong reason. Nick Carraway describes him saying, “Two shining, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body—he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing and you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It was a body capable of enormous leverage—a cruel body”(Fitzgerald,7).
As famous mathematician and scientist Albert Einstein once revealed, “It has become appallingly obvious that technology has exceeded our humanity.” Einstein questions whether or not the astounding amount of advanced technology that remains within humanity is overall beneficial to the world or not. Obviously, Einstein obtained clear opinions towards the amount of technology that existed in humanity during his time period. He thought that technology brought more negative consequences to society than positive ones. His theory remains the thought that if individuals become too dependent on one thing or idea, then the results may remain unfavorable.
