Tom and Gatsby are both insecure because they care way too much about what other people think. We can see Gatsby's insecurity by the way he responds to Daisy's reaction to his party. Gatsby got all worried that she hated it and then he was upset and didn't know what to do about it. We see Tom's insecurities when he says “I’d rather not be the polo player”(Fitzgerald 105) and this shows he’s insecure because he would rather be seen as a rich man and not just a polo player.
In the Great Gatsby, each character has contributions to Jay Garsby death, but some are small contributions and some are major. The character Daisy Buchanas the wife of Tom Buchanan. They live in East Egg, which represents old money. There Tom Buchanan who cheats on his wife and figures out who Jay Gatsby really is. The characters in the novel are mostly mixtures of good and evil. Although the book does not clearly delineate the villains or heroes, there is one character who tends to stand out as a villain known as Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is a major character in the book.
He is deeply invested in maintaining the social hierarchy of the society in which he lives, believing that his wealth and status entitle him to certain privileges. Tom is also possessive and jealous, particularly when it comes to his wife, Daisy. He becomes threatened by Gatsby's attempts to win Daisy's love, and his jealousy ultimately leads to tragedy. First of all, Tom Buchanan and George Wilson largely shared their attitudes toward women. For example, it is clear that Tom is concerned that Daisy, his wife, would go off on her own and do things by herself. One instance of him acknowledging this concern is when he says "I wonder where in the devil he met Daisy. By God, I may be old−fashioned in my ideas, but women run around too much these days to suit me” (Fitzgerald 111). Tom says this after finding out that Gatsby had met his wife, implying that Daisy was “running around too much” simply by going anywhere at all without his prior knowledge.
The most shocking moment in the novel The Great Gatsby was ultimately when George Wilson snuck into Gatsby’s backyard and shot him in the back, sending him falling into his pool. Scott Fitzgerald implies that insecurity can lead to people controlling and manipulating others to feel better about themselves, through Tom Buchanan’s treatment and manipulation of Daisy and Myrtle both physically and emotionally, and Tom’s way of degrading George Wilson and Gatsby based on their intelligence and wealth status. Tom’s insecurity is most apparent with his relationship with Daisy because Tom allows himself to do anything he wants, but if Daisy does the same thing he gets upset and undermines her intelligence because she is a woman.

In her article “How The Great Gatsby Explains Trump,” Rosa Smith illustrates how within Gatsby, the act of “lashing out” due to a surfeit of power is carried through by Tom Buchanan, the double-dealing antagonist of the novel. Tom demonstrates how power trumps all, and how when one possesses power, they have the capability to write their own truth.

In my opinion, Tom is most responsible for Gatsby’s death. I believe that Tom is most responsible because Tom forgot to tell George that Daisy was the driver of Gatsby’s car the night Myrtle was hit by it. Tom forgot to tell George that because him and Daisy were plotting this out. I could tell something was up when Nick refers that “Tom and Daisy talking in the house(146). I also think that Daisy is a little bit responsible because she took on some bad morals when she hit Myrtle because she could have stopped the car after she hit Myrtle.

In the court of law there’s only one person who was responsible and guilty for the murder of Jay Gatsby. Although in the eyes of god there was more than one person responsible for the murder or had the ability to stop the outcome of the murder. Weather it was Tom being honest about his affair, Daisy doing the right thing and stopping during the accident or Jay Gatsby himself by taking control of the situation and doing what was good for both Daisy and himself instead of just what 's best for Daisy. Tom, Myrtle, Daisy, and Gatsby were selfish and self centered leading them to become Morally responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby.
In “The Great Gatsby” by F.Scott Fitzgerald, Tom Buchanan represents a man who is unfaithful, selfish, and arrogant. Throughout this essay, the character Tom Buchanan will be analyzed and will explain his purpose in this story as well as the many flaws he possesses which make him an unlikable person. Tom is considered to be the antagonist in this novel, but his main purpose in this story is to be the barrier between Daisy and Gatsby. This claim can be proven through Daisy’s continuous affair with Gatsby despite Tom’s suspicions, Daisy selfish nature, and the fact that she killed Myrtle herself and let Gatsby take blame. For example, Daisy’s continuous affair with Gatsby despite Tom’s suspicion was one of the factors in Gatsby’s death. One example of this is when Nick witnesses “Daisy’s face was smeared with tears, and when I came in she jumped up and began wiping at it with her handkerchief” (89).
