The book called “Game Changers” by Mike Lupica is a story about a boy named Ben McBain who is very small but is the best quarterback his football team has but another kid named Shawn O’Brian who clearly does not deserve to be the starting quarterback gets it, all because his dad is the head coach. Ben does not want to be a bad teammate, so he helps Shawn become a better quarterback. Shawn does become a better quarterback but he does not become better then Ben. Ben does end up getting his chance at being quarterback.
In his article “Should College Athletes be Paid? Why, They Already Are”, Seth Davis is able to effectively argue why Branch’s argument in “The Shame of College Sports” is incorrect through his use of rhetorical strategies to the Sports Illustrated audience. Davis’ use of ethos addresses Branch’s trustworthiness in what he includes or does not include in his article. Through his use of logos Davis is able to point out why Branch’s logic does not add up. Finally, Davis’ accusatory tone asserts his opinion of Branch’s writing, which tears down why Branch’s own article is flawed.
American Sociologist, Jonathan R. Cole, in his article, “Why Sports and Elite Academics Do Not Mix,” (2017), argues that highly selective colleges should withdraw from the NCAA to form their own league because these universities are not attempting to create national championship programs. He supports his claim by first describing the revenue that the NCAA receives from monopolizing college sports teams, then explains that these NCAA athletes are involved in scandalous interests due to their lack of quality education and leadership, then reveals the extent a college will go to ensure their athletes can participate in the NCAA, and finally imparts the deprivation that these universities have with diversity of their student’s talents. Cole’s purpose
The Education of Dasmine Cathey “The Education of Dasmine Cathey,” by Brad Wolverton is an informative and compelling story about a student athlete who struggles with making educated choices that he is not familiar with in life, college, and football. There are so many reasons young college athletes succeed in sports, but fail in education. This story is a tragic tale of educational shortfalls that caused Mr. Cathey a football player to fall through the cracks of a flawed school system and became exploited by his family, friends and the college football program. These challenges during these times, created unwanted side effects in every aspect of his life. This is a great story because the author allowed the reader to feel every emotion

The book is about the hardships of football and the dedication to perfection that it requires of its players. High school football is huge in Texas. The Permian Panthers was no ordinary high school team. To play on this prestigious team was an honor every boy in town hoped to achieve; every father hoped for their son. This town was so obsessed with football that they did not even blink when the football team chartered planes for away games at the cost of $20,000 while the teachers could barely afford textbooks.
Bo Jackson was by far one of the greatest baseball/ football players of all time. He played two sports football, and baseball both which take huge amounts of strength to compete in just one. He was the best he hit home runs all the time, he hit the crown of the tv at kauffman stadium which has only been
I remember for years Michael Wilborn was against paying college student athletes. Mr. Wilborn always said on “Pardon the Interruption”, free room and board, free meals, and tuition is enough compensation. He did his research on how much money the NCAA draws from different networks, from CBS/Tuner Sports March Madness made $10.8 billion exact between 2011 through 2024. Break it down by years that is a total of $11 billion dollars for three weekends in one month. That stat turns Michael Wilborn statement from not paying student athletes to pay the students athletes
He finished with the 7th most yards there. He was selected by the Denver Broncos in 2010 in the NFL draft. Demaryius Thomas is 6 foot three inches. He has been to the super bowl twice, he has won the super bowl only once. He has had 52 total touchdowns.
In 2005, all star running back Reggie Bush out of the University of Southern California won one of the most valuable awards possible for a collegiate athlete to win, the Heisman Trophy. Winning the Heisman trophy as a college football player is like finding gold after years of searching. What’s even more crazy is Reggie Bush was a running back and since the year 2000, fifteen quarterbacks have been given that award, and only three running backs (including Bush) won this award. Reggie Bush was a great and likable person amongst his peers, and a phenomenal athlete. Reggie Bush broke many records during his time attending the University of Southern California, including the Walter Camp and Doak Walker awards in 2005, the Heisman trophy in 2005
This is another example of how Tom has made money off the field. With more money from off the field business, Tom can now invest more in retirement. He is getting old and retirement from football is in the near future. He has set himself up good though. He will continue to success in TB12 post football.
Why Do College Athletes Have to Suffer? College athletics and the treatment of their athletes is an ongoing topic among many people. College athletes have to maintain amateur status to be eligible to play college sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the governing body for college sports, states that no college athlete can receive pay of any kind for the sport they play (Amateurism). College athletics have become big business over the past few decades with millions of dollars being poured into the NCAA, universities, and colleges.
I never knew that back then college football teams were competing against the army. It was interesting to see that those game were common and usually in favor of the army with the reputation that it has of being strong. Now just as coach Warner was able to discover Jim Thorpe one of the greatest athlete to have existed, Rockne discover George Gipp. The Gipper was a nobody and Rockne saw his talent and made him a star is known by many back then, but now he is not known and with that another athlete lost in history. I had heard the saying “win one for the Gipper”, but I never understood it and where it came from.
