Leading up to the Civil Rights Movement, the black community was in a constant battle against law enforcement treating them unfair compared to the white community. The Scottsboro Boys and Emmett Till’s cases were one of the many times that the legal system showed to be unfair to blacks. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the law enforcement and community were very racist against blacks and believed all blacks were criminals. In the story, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer gets put into a very difficult situation and decides to defend a black man, who went by the name of Tom Robinson.
Did you know that a average mockingbird has a range of 250 to 350 songs it can sing, the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee came out in 1960, and many who read the book wonder what character is the symbol for a mockingbird, the book is narrated by a little girl named Jean louise(scout) and she has a older brother and father, the book takes place during the Great Depression and focuses around a court case that scouts father is a lawyer in. Tom Robinson represents the mockingbird because he was unfairly targeted, and innocently killed. The first reason why Tom Robinson represent the mockingbird is because he was unfairly targeted, In the story to kill a mockingbird, Atticus said to his kids,” shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can
Harper Lee uses symbolism to explain the idea of prejudice in the novel. She does this by letting the reader know the people of Maycomb’s feeling towards Tom Robinson with out knowing the whole story. For example, in to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson is put to death for a crime he did not commit. This can relate to when Atticus says, “shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit tem, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This means that it was also a sin to kill a tom Robinson.
To Kill a Mockingbird: In To Kill a Mockingbird there are plenty of lessons that you learn reading the book. The one I am going to talk to about is always being nice by seeing things from other’s point of view. There is a quote from the book “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. This quote is saying be nice to everyone, because you don’t know what they’re going through. The quote was from Atticus.
A novel talking about society in the mid 90’s shows how evil the people are, including racism, drama, and the meaning behind the title of To Kill A Mockingbird. Harper Lee was a novelist who wrote the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize. To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel about racism, because how evil a single society can be. To Kill A Mockingbird is taking place in the Maycomb County Alabama, and character houses. The plot of the novel is about how a single society can be so evil, and racism during 1929–1941 when the Great Depression hit the US.
In the novel To A Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows that Prejudice is evil, and affects everyone whether or not they are a victim of it. One of many quotes that supports this claim would be when, Tom Robinson, a black man actused of rape, says he felt sorry for Mayella, a white girl that was supposedly raped by Tom. The author writes, “Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-” (Lee, p.224)
The quote “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Is a good way to symbolize Tom Robinson and the court case. Tom Robinson is similar to a mockingbird in that he is an innocent victim of prejudice and injustice. Despite being innocent, he is falsely accused of a crime and is unable to defend himself against the unfairness of the court system. Like a mockingbird, he was then killed for doing nothing but trying to live his life and mind his own business like a mockingbird.
Why Tom Robinson Is A Mockingbird "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 90).
“Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” is a quote in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This quote shows that although many characters within the movie faced hatred and judgment from those who did not agree with their actions, they still pursued what they believed to be morally right, rather than what the majority thought. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the early 1930’s within the small town of Maycomb County. During this time period, the Great Depression was beginning to present itself. The Great Depression caused several disadvantages to the western society, such as the stock market crashing, which caused bank failure, unemployment, and excessive amounts of
When is it that you are mature enough to fully understand the world you live in? Most people usually answer the ages of 14-18. However, sometimes there are instances where young children are forced to grow up much more quickly than usual. One amazing example of this type of rapid maturity is in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, where the seven-year-old main character Jean Louise “Scout” Finch witnesses the unfair arrest, trial, and death of an African American field hand named Tom Robinson, set in 1930s rural Alabama. In this novel, Lee uses characterization and conflict to develop the theme that stereotypes and prejudice based on someone’s race and skin color are not only wrong, but can have dangerous, and sometimes fatal, detriments
The prejudice that is demonstrated throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee reveals how a community views certain groups of people. As one reads through the book To Kill a Mockingbird they see that sexism is revealed from the very beginning of the text. The author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, points out, “Men’s stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three o’clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum powder,” (Lee 5).
The Scout Law states that a boy scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. These are twelve words that were pounded into my head from the time I started in scouts. Not all these words have had significant meaning to me, none the less I have tried to live my life by them. I could sit here and write an essay about what all these words mean to me. That, however, isn 't what 's been asked, so I’ll talk about three of these words.
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice And Men, almost most of the characters lie about something. People lie even if they’re innocent because they want to protect themselves from being an outcast. Calpurnia lies about being able to read, Dolphus Raymond lies about being an alcoholic, and even worse, Mayella lies about Tom Robinson raping her. All of these false accusations lead to consequences and the only reason these people did this is because they’re too worried about their social standing in their community and they don’t want to be looked at any differently than anybody else.
“‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’” (119) To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a small town called Maycomb county, located in Southern Alabama. The narrator, Scout Finch, goes over the past three years of her life from when she was six to eight.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper E. Lee demonstrates that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird by symbolically representing the mockingbird as Tom Robinson; a man who is first arbitrarily prosecuted, then deprived of his innocence, and mercilessly shot down for an infraction that he did not commit. When Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white woman, it does not matter that he has never done or been accused of such a thing before because in a town like Maycomb, he is automatically guilty; not of rape like one would think, but simply of being black. When explaining to Jem why Tom will be found guilty no matter what happens in court, Atticus states: “Tom Robinson’s a colored man, Jem. No jury in this part of the world’s going to say, ‘We think
