In the Story To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, an African American is blamed and killed for something that was not his fault and had nothing to do with. But in the report of Emmett Till he was killed for something that he did do. So there are a couple of things that i can Compare and contrast about Tom Robinson and Emmett till and why they both suffered the same “consequences” Tom Robinson was accused of the rape and beating of Mayella ewell even though it was obvious That Bob Ewell was the one who beat her, And Emmett Till was killed because he he “Harassed” a white woman that was married because he’s friends told him to do it. Some of the things that we can contrast about them is that Tom Robinson was NOT the one who “Raped” and “Beat”
The Emmett Till case should be taught in 2018 as not just a murder that triggered the civil rights movement, but as a case that still reflects the injustices that African American men face in the American Justice system. Not only should Emmitt till’s murder reflect the injustices in America today, but retaught since new information has recently surfaced which shows a different side to the whole case. Emmett Till was murdered on August 28, 1955 in Money, Mississippi and found beaten and floating in the local river. Emmett Till was murdered by Carolyn Bryant’s husband Roy Bryant and her brother-in-law Milam Bryant.
Fearing a mob outbreak at Maycomb county, attorney of the defendant, Atticus Finch stationed himself in front of Maycomb jail to protect Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was under trial for raping, choking, and hitting Mayella Violet Ewell. Atticus Finch was before a crowd which had gathered about the jail. They were threatening until Dill and Atticus’s children came.
Emmett Till was a 14 year old African American boy who was murdered while visiting relatives in money, Mississippi. In money, mississippi, he went into a store and was said to have whistled at a the store clerk (1). In source one, it said that he liked to play pranks and he was dared to ask the white cashier ,Carolyn Bryant, for a date. A few days later, Carolyn 's husband and brother in law went to Emmett’s uncle’s house, wear he was staying (1). In the middle of the night he was forced to carry a cotton gin fan to the Tallahatchie river, then he was beaten, got his eye gouged out, shot in the head, and thrown in the river, tied to the cotton gin fan.
Emmett Till’s story and Tom’s story are very much similar and different at the same time. Emmett Till’s story is real and it actually happened in real life, but Tom’s story was not real even though it might have seemed real though the book. Tom Robinson’s story was sad to read in the book, even though it was not real. His story was being falsely accused for assault and rape of his owners wife.
To kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Mockingbirds do not cause harm or trouble; in fact their only purpose is to convince others with beautiful music. Tom Robinson’s death can easily be compared to that of a mockingbird; it did no good but also prevented no evil. Mr. Underwood chooses to write an article that basically every citizen of Maycomb can understand, and this proves to the reader the obvious connection between Tom Robinson and the symbol of a mockingbird. Mr. Underwood chooses to ignore the prominent racial barrier that separated Tom Robinson from justice, and chooses to focus on his disability instead.
Emmett Till, a young black boy of Mississippi, was murdered by Roy Bryant and John W. Milam in August of 1955. The notorious case drew in a crowd of more than a thousand people, all attentive to the decision on whether or not to indict the accused men. However, by the ruling of an all-white-man jury, Bryant and Milam were acquitted on all charges. This decision sparked a national outcry from the African American population, and ultimately fueled the flames to Black Civil Rights in the South. Despite racial barriers established in America, Bryant, Milam, and the town of Sumner, Mississippi recognized the extinguished life of a human being, not just a negro boy, evidenced through the website famous murder trials by Douglas O. Linder.
To Kill a Mockingbird is famous for its controversy. In fact, it has been banned from being read at many schools for its use of racial, sexual, and political content, all of these aiding the book’s “big ideas”. To Kill a Mockingbird has many themes. For example, one is about racial injustice. You would think a jury would establish their final decision based upon the facts, but in this book, the jury had already made up its mind once it heard that the case was a white man versus a black man.
So the african Americans were. treated poorly and unfairly. Tom Robinson did not do what he was accused of but just because he is black they but him to trial and found him guilty. This is true not only in the book but also in real life in 1931 with the a Scottsboro.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
Tom Robinson's character arc begins with being accused of a crime he did not commit. Tom Robinson was described as a kind and hard-working man who would often work for his white neighbor, Mayella Ewell, because he believed, as a black man, he should help her in whatever way he could. These acts of kindness were not only because of his race but also because he truly wanted to help his neighbor. Bob Ewell, the father of Mayella Ewell, accused Tom of rape even though there was no evidence to warrant his claims. After Bob Ewell accused Tom of rape, his life became much worse.
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I am on page 304. So far in this book, Tom Robinson is on trial for beating a white woman. Atticus is his lawyer, and Scott, Dill, and Jem go to the hearing. Tom is ultimately tried guilty by the jury.
Maycomb’s Mockingbird: Tom Robinson Tom Robinson is arguably the greatest example of a “mockingbird” in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird because he never intentionally caused harm, faced a biased community, and died a guilty, forgotten man. Atticus claims mockingbirds are different from other birds by saying “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
Argumentative Essay “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”. Atticus Finch decided to defend Tom Robinson when he was accused of raping a white woman. I would’ve done the same thing as Atticus because I believe that back then it wasn’t a very fair world. As soon as a white person blamed a black person Police or the Judge would automatically take the word or the white person.
Because the jury did not favor black men, Tom Robinson did not receive a fair trial, although Atticus made a great case. Segregation directly disobeys the fourteenth amendment, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.” Maycomb Alabama is where the story, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place. Tom Robinson’s trial out come was not based on factual evidence. Mayella was lying to the jury, while Tom was completely innocent.
