Then Bob Ewell showed up, Tom was scared and ran, not knowing what else to do because it is bad for a black man to be alone with a white woman. Mayella Ewell took the easy way out by choosing to accuse Tom Robinson of something he had not done so that she could cover up what she had done, kissing a black man without his consent. At the end of the case, I hope you use the evidence given and the facts to return to a quilty case on the charge of perjury. Members of the jury, the County will review the evidence against Mayella Ewell, who took the easy way out and lied during court, which ended up costing Tom Robinson’s life. During the trial, “Mr. Gilmer waited for Mayella to collect herself: she had twisted her handkerchief into a sweaty rope; when she opened it to wipe her face it was a mass of creases from her hot hands” (Lee 205).
August On a night in August, Tom Robinson allegedly sexually assaulted Ms. Mayella. The facts are that everyone knows is Tom would always walk by that house everyday when he went back to the field. What we do not know is if he helped her everyday or not, Tom says in court that Ms. Mayella would always call him over to help her with chores, cutting up tinder and many regular chores. Ms. Mayella had a completely different story, she said that she only called him over that one time to ask for him to take something of a high point which she could not reach.
Recently, a negro named Tom Robinson has been jailed for supposedly raping a white woman, whose name is Mayella Violet Ewell. This is certainly biased since the family of Mayella did not provide any fact or evidence, rather only one witness who could have easily lied. Therefore, Tom Robinson could have been falsely accused of doing something a man like himself wouldn’t do. There are several reasons that suggest that Tom Robinson is innocent.
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, we are told of the trial of Tom Robinson from the perspective of the main character, Scout. Scout lived in Maycomb County with her brother, Jem, and her father, Atticus. Tom Robinson went to trial against the Ewell family, being accused for allegedly raping Mayella Ewell, and Atticus is appointed by Judge Taylor to defend him during the trial. The Ewell family were well known throughout Maycomb County, they lived in a small, secluded junkyard and were poor. To see whether Tom Robinson is guilty of the alleged rape of Mayella Ewell, his trial consists of the testimonies from Sheriff Tate, Bob and Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson himself, as well as Atticus’s closing argument.
Taken for granted, Tom Robinson is being accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. Mayella’s Father, Bob Ewell, was the one for beating Mayella, and she blamed it all on Tom because the community would believe Tom was getting accused of rape; Mayella put all the blame on Tom because she did not want her father to go to jail. The community sides with Mayella because she is a white woman, and Tom is African American. Tom Robinson is convicted because of his race and the diversity that Maycomb has, and everyone in Maycomb gives him racial comments and calls him names. Atticus helps Tom out by being his lawyer for the case; he wants to show that he believes Tom and not Mayella, and he also wants justice for Tom.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus’s view of the Tom Robinson trial before the trial was that he needed to represent Tom even if he couldn’t win. Atticus believed that if he didn’t defend himself, he’d be betraying his beliefs. Once the trial began, Atticus remained adamant that Tom was innocent and committed to fighting for Tom regardless of whether the town’s prejudice is going to keep him from disproving the allegations. After the trial, Atticus was disappointed, yet his beliefs stayed strong as he was trying to teach his kids. Before the trial, Atticus was immediately drawn to the case because he believed that Tom was innocent and he would be the one to represent him.
Throughout history races have been oppressed. Even after being freed are scared of their previous captors. We see that in this case because even though Tom Robinson is free he still has the mindset of a slave. Tom though free hasn 't pursued an education, which could help him make more money to help his family.
The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written by “Harper Lee”. In this book there are families that live in Macomb County with the neighbors within the County making judgements on each family, besides a man named “Atticus Finch”, which he is a lawyer. Atticus had two children, a girl named Scout or Jean Louise Finch, and a boy named Jem or Jeremy Atticus Finch. So there is a trial going on and Atticus was chosen to defend an African American, which everyone is disliking him for, because he is going to actually try to defend him. The man he is defending is named “Tom Robinson” and he is on trial for being accused of rape by Mr.Ewell.
Long before Tom Robinson is introduced into the novel, it is clearly known to the reader that ‘negroes’ are considered in the lower class and always convicted guilty, regardless of the truth. Tom is accused of sexual rape by Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella Ewell, who is an obnoxious young lady with an attraction to Tom. Sheriff Heck Tate testifies that Mayella was hit on the right side of her face. Tom’s lawyer, Atticus Finch, believes that this is crucial evidence for Tom’s case and asks Heck, repeatedly, to clarify that it was the right side of her face: “It was her right eye… Which side again Heck?... The right side Mr. Finch” (192).
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
A hero is a villain in the eyes of someone else. This implies that even though someone may be a villain to you, they are a hero in some else's eyes. This applies to both Tom Robinson from To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee and Victor from Cracked written by K.M Walton. Victor and Tom are both be hated by the people they live with. In Toms case, he is being hated by his small town.
Dear Members of the Jury, I am writing you this letter to tell to you that Tom Robinson should be proven not guilty. This case would have never happened if the truth would have been told and it wasn’t a case between black and white. There are many ways that Robinson is not guilty. One of these reasons that Tom Robinson is not guilty is that if you listened to the Sheriff 's testimony he stumbled frequently and when he said something and then Atticus would say something different he would agree with Atticus. Tom Robinson is a very polite man with great manners, which you could take into consideration that he wouldn’t dare hurt this woman in this kind of manner.
Most of black people of Maycomb in the 1930swere terrorized of committing some crime because they could be lynched for a crime they did not commit or do. One example of the book in chapter 18 was the start of the trial of Tom Robinson who was accused of rape and was in fear of being lynched for a crime he did not do. The main meaning of to Kill a Mocking Bird is to show how black people were being thought of as non-human simply because of their skin color. Tom Robinson’s trial began at chapter 18 and he feared of being lynched. He was accused by Bob Ewell because his daughter told him the Tom Robinson was the one who raped her.
Tom Robinson's left arm is useless due to an old accident, whereas Mr. Ewell uses with his left. Given the evidence of reasonable doubt, Tom should go free, but after hours of deliberation, the jury pronounces him guilty. Before all this, Scout, Jem and Dill sneak into the courthouse to see the trial and sit in the balcony with Maycomb's black residents. They are stunned at the verdict because to them, the evidence was so clearly in Tom's favor. Though the verdict is unfortunate, Atticus feels some satisfaction that the jury took so long deciding.
Mr. Gilmer would have said it’s the jury duty to convict Tom Robinson for what he has done. That Mayella will never know peace until Tom is hung for his crimes. That with Tom running free no women would be safe. He would want to play up the stereotypes of savage black man that can’t be trusted with white women, because that would hit home with the men on the jury. This tact Mr. Glimer hopes to distract them from the lack of facts.
