Robinson accused of raping a white woman, the residents of Maycomb are mad that Atticus would help him. The town of Maycomb suddenly turns against the Finches. Alexandra and her grandson condemn his decision to defend Tom. Alexandra’s portrayal is mostly negative. Atticus tells his children to avoid getting in fights, even if they are verbally attacked. When he gives Jem and Scout toy guns as presents, he tells them that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Chapter 12-16

Heck Tate tells his account of what happened on November 21st. Then Mr. Ewell gives his account. Heck Tate said Mayella’s right eye was bruised Atticus asks Mr. Ewell what hand he writes with. He is left handed, it is suggested that Mr. Ewell could have easily held down Mayella and beat her right side with his left hand.n this chapter, Mayella tells the jury what her version of what happened on November 21st.Mayella is then asked to recite what happened that night. She said she asked Tom Robinson to bust up a chiffarobe but as she was turning around, he grabbed her and took advantage of her. However since Tom’s left arm is crippled and Mayella was beat up on her right side, it wouldn’t make much sense that Tom beat her up.Tom Robinson gives his account of what happened that night. His story is rather surprising. He says that Mayella wanted him to fix a door. When he couldn’t find a door to fix, Mayella jumped and hugged him and told him to kiss her. While Scout and Dill leave the courtroom, they run into Mr. Raymond. He offers a drink to Dill. Scout, thinking the drink is whiskey, warns Dill not to drink anymore. Atticus agrees and explains that when there is a white man against a black man, the white man always wins. The African Miss Stephanie exclaims that as Atticus walked into town he ran into Bob Ewell, who spat at him, called him names, and threatened to kill him.Scout wants to invite Walter Cunningham to her house.
