Tom Robinson's Injustice

The great crime committed by humanity, injustice. Throughout history the American judicial system has done great injustice for colored individuals. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mocking Bird, a young Negro man who goes by the name of Tom Robinson is wrongly convicted of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. The novel takes place in the small town a Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Tom was then taken to court and is defended by Atticus Finch who clearly proved Tom couldn’t have raped Mayella due to her injuries being caused by a left-handed person, which Tom did not have use of his left arm. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, some say that the injustice done to Tom Robinson is caused by Mayella Ewell because she could have easily confessed Tom did not rape her but, the real culprit of his injustice is Bob Ewell because he is the one who claims to have witnessed the event and also he is clearly the one who actually beat and raped Mayella. The reason why some people think that the injustice done to Tom Robinson was caused by Mayella Ewell is because she is the victim who says she was raped by Tom. In Bob’s testimony he claims that he ran home and says, “I run up to th’ window and I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella!”(231). But after having seen his daughter beaten he clearly doesn’t worry about her medical condition which is shown when Atticus ask him, “Weren’t you concerned with Mayella’s condition?”(234). Bob had done a lot of running that day running to the house and then to the Sheriff but he did not run to a doctor.
