Lexi Smith Mrs. Roggow American Lit 13 December 2022 Literary Essay In the novel The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, we watch as a mischievous boy becomes a young man. Throughout the book the traumatic events he encounters makes him realize he can’t be as careless in this world as he would like. With the situations the character faces we can tell that this is a coming of age novel by these events, how his actions affect others, learning about love, and watching a murder. Think if that was you, a little boy no older than 12 sitting right behind a person who is getting stabbed. In chapter 9 after Huck and Tom witnessed the murder they were sitting there terrified wondering if they were gonna be next. At first they thought the shadows in the graveyard were just ghosts, until they heard one of them say “here it is” recognizing Injin Joe’s along with Muff Potter’s voice. Knowing some of the shadows made it a little better for the boys, but at the same time it didn't. After some conversation, Injin Joe murdered Dr. Robinson then proceeded to put him in the lidless coffin. With the boys not knowing what to do they ran, the one thing they did know was that they could never tell anyone what they had just seen. Huck states that “ It don't make any difference what happens, we got to keep mum. We’d drop dead, don't you know that.” Knowing they had to keep quiet was the worst part, when in chapter 23 the townspeople accused Potter of the murder and threw him in jail without any evidence. Tom wanted to say something but, in my opinion i believe it is better he didnt in front of all the angry townspeople. I believe this because with how the people
