Clemens, Courtney Mrs. Zajac ELA Period 3 8 February 2023 Question One “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. -Saint Augustine”. In the novel, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, the reader is presented with the main character, Johnny, a fourteen-year-old silversmith apprentice to Mr. Lapham, the master smith of the Lapham house, in the time of the Revolutionary War. Throughout the book, this character is portrayed as prideful and arrogant.
In the book “ Johnny Tremain” written by Esther Forbes, the theme pride really stands out in the beginning of the book. In this book, it repeatedly shows pride as a bad thing. Pride is one of the few things in the world that isn’t just good or evil. Pride is only evil if you let it become more important than everything else. This is a quote by C.Lewis “ pride is a spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, contentment, or even common sense,’”
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn” (google.com). This quote can easily describe the character Reverend Jonathan Hale in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible is placed in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692-1693. Miller wrote The Crucible to show the similarities between McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials. Moreover, since Reverend Jonathan Hale is motivated by his will to find witchcraft, his decision to try to get the condemned to confess creates controversy by the end of the play.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Scout receives her call to her quest after Atticus takes on the rape case against Tom Robinson. As Atticus’ daughter, Scout becomes involved in the initiative effects of Atticus taking on the case which begins an individual call for Scout. “I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s Tom Robinson. He lives in that little settlement beyond the town dump.” This quote stated by Atticus provides for specific insight to the instance when it is first formally introduced that Atticus took up the case.
One of the people Twain doesn’t admire is The King because he portrays him as a river con man who claims to be a dissapeared heir to the French Throne who also takes control of Huck and Jim’s raft. Pap would be another character who is not admirable because he treated his son worse than a slave owner treated a slave. The Duke is also portrayed as a bad man because he is The King’s side-kick who is also a con man. The Shepherdsons were also a group of unadmirable people because they shot Buck Grangerford along with his family. Mrs. Loftus is a little bit unadmirable because she didn’t let Huck have any of her food or things that he was in need of.
In the historical fiction novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, the central character Billie Jo faces many adversities that could have crushed her hopes, dreams and spirit. The author Karen Hesse, states, “the way I see it, hard times aren’t only about money, or drought, or dust. .Hard times are about losing spirit, and hope, and what happens when dreams dry up.” This quote means that the way the author sees it, the hard times in Billie Jo’s life aren’t always on the surface, as she faced losing her sense of self, her optimism, and her goals she wished to achieve. Billie Jo is confronted with the challenges of her strained relationship with her father, as well as guilt over her mother’s death, yet she is able to hold onto her spirit, hopes,
“Heroes are made in the hour of defeat.” This quote, by the late Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian activist, perfectly encapsulates the meaning of a hero. A hero is someone who stands up for what he or she believes in, and confronts the evils that the person may face, no matter how big or small those evils may be. This is exhibited in both Harper Lee's Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird, and Markus Zusac's Hans Hubberman and Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief. Just like the quote eludes to, these characters stay resilient even when there seems to be no hope.
The author uses revenge as a clear theme, specifically in the ending of the book The Roundhouse. Joe takes revenge on his mother's attacker by killing him with the help of his best friend Cappy. Although revenge was accomplished in Joe’s mind, it did not make the characters, such as Joe and Cappy, feel any better about their situation. However, after he and Cappy, had committed the deed, they did not feel happy, it wasn't a sweet revenge at all as they both had haunting nightmares of his mother's attacker in their dreams. They are both afraid and insecure after their kill and felt nervous around almost everyone.

Achieving true heroic status requires courage, something Tom Sawyer digs deep to find in order to save Muff Potter. For example, in the trial of Muff Potter, Tom is scared. He is scared because of the night before the trial, he told Muff’s lawyer everything he knew. This took courage because, on the night of the murder, Tom and Huck made a vow never to tell anyone about what they saw. Tom is very superstitious, and he really believes that he may die now that he broke the oath.
Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in that he doesn't do one thing wrong. All he does is provide help to the people he interacts with. That is exactly how he got in trouble. Tom Robinson was helping Mayella with some chores. He was humming a melody and when he chopped up the dresser drawers.
Revenge can be a horrible emotion; it can sometimes lead people to do horrible things. By definition, Revenge means to get retribution for a wrongdoing done to you. In my opinion, revenge is mostly caused by fear and the overwhelming feeling of payback Throughout history, revenge, or vengeance, has been altered by several cultures and religions, and even the American culture. Though it often leads one to perform criminal acts, Howard argues that it is a necessary component in the functioning of society. He points out that revenge is a threat that acts as a disincentive to undeserved violence.
"This has got to be, patently, the most unbelievable, the most ridiculous story I have ever heard," remarks the narrator and protagonist of Haruki Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase, almost as if aware of the fantastical interweaves within the otherwise realistic, believable novel. In many of his works, Murakami has adopted this signature style of portraying the unbelievable and far-fetched in realistic settings, and is one of numerous writers and artists to have done so throughout the years. This technique, termed "magic realism", has its roots in post-expressionist German painting as well as European and Latin American writing in the 20th century, and has been expounded by a host of critics and writers such as Franz Roh, Alejo Carpentier, and Angel Flores (Bowers, 7). Because of its diverse
Atticus’ courage is shown in multiple ways through his court actions and his stand against racial discrimination. For instance, as a lawyer, Atticus defends the innocent, despite controversial thoughts of others, this is proven true in the Tom Robinson court case. During this discriminative period, most African Americans brought to court for an accused crime were deemed guilty, despite the clear evidence that proved their innocence. When Jem thought Atticus’ defense of Tom will bring Tom to justice, Reverend Sykes said: “I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man”(Lee 279). This proves Atticus’ courage because he chose to fight for a colored man to prove that he is not guilty of an alleged crime, despite knowing the usual outcome of the case and the disapproval he will receive from others.
