Tom went from being a miserable kid ignoring his past to a man who have reach peace of mind and tries to understand his past. After being injured and sent to a hospital, this allowed him to reflect. Shortly after leaving, he encounters a bear then engages in a bear hunt. During his bear hunt, he meets the All-mother which causes him to change, making it become the catalyst for the change. This encounter brings peace to Thomas’s mind and allows him to reflect his past with ease. Before the changes, Tom was more careless and reckless without any stopping at any point in time to reflect or think. He would lose track of time and go to rodeos without any delays or stops and kill all the broncos he rides. He was emotionless and expressionless until he entered the arena, doing it for the adrenaline and distracting himself from his past while mystifying the crowd with his overly aggressive riding. He changes during his bear hunt when he encounters the All-mother who sings a chant with Thomas while also claiming Thomas as her son. After singing the chant, he is reminded of his Ute origins which leads him to ask himself “Who am I?” when aiming his shotgun at the bear during his hunt. When wondering what he is, the bear symbolized his Ute childhood making him decide not to kill the bear as he would feel like he would lose everything he ever became. After realizing who he was and what he was doing, he reforms himself and repays for his previous misdeeds with the traditional Ute ways. After satisfying himself with Ute methods and the All-mother’s claim, he feels comfortable with his Ute past, no longer feeling like he doesn’t belong or feel pain from his past. Enabling him to finally be at peace with himself and his past without fleeing from his past and able to look back on
