Is it in the ending of the novel that Tommy Wilhelm shows his real self? There are three situations which will be the cause of Wilhelm’s collapse at the very end. He collapses because of all the stifled worries he has been repressing since a long time. He never faces his own problems; he is a character who seems to be indifferent against life. Nevertheless, in the final scene Wilhelm connect with himself and reveals his feelings. The first situation is when Wilhelm, after being deceived by Dr. Tamkin, looks for his father in order to receive some help. His father rejects him and tells him ‘’he was not going to pick up a cross.’’ This will leave Wilhelm helplessly captive to misery and makes him realized that he can’t depend on his father anymore,
