Reading log 3 Novel Tomorrow When The War Began John Marsden Tomorrow when the war began is a fictional novel written by an Australian author John Marsden. Whilst it touches on many different subjects I think the overall main idea is change. This is shown through the development of the characters and their relationships during their fight for freedom and survival during World War Three. Change is something that affects everyone so it's very easy for the reader to relate to. I personally really enjoyed reading this book because the targeted audience are teenagers since it’s a story of a group of teenagers being the heroes. Each of the eight teenagers Ellie, Homer, Corrie, Lee, Fiona, Robyn, Kevin and Chris who's introduced later in the book were forced to adapt to the war which was to be their new lifestyle. Throughout the story all of their characteristics build and change in consequence of the war. For example, Ellie Linton, the narrator of the story comes across as a typical, innocent country girl before the invasion. Before the invasion Ellie described Wirrawee to sound like a safe little town, where not much happened so the change in setting was rather to the other extreme after the invasion. Wirrawee became the place full of destruction and fear. It was no longer a safe place. When Ellie said “We believed we were safe. That was the big fantasy.” it reminded me of the connection I have with my home and it the fact that wars like this are still happening around the world. It's scary to think that this kind of change does still happen and it negatively affects so many innocent people's lives. For now I feel thankful that our beautiful country is still a reasonably safe place with no war however it scares me to think that might not always be the
