Domestic Violence in a relationship in “Spurs”
From Tod Robbins’s short story “spurs”, it showcases a lot of verbal abuse among coworkers and two people that are in a relationship along with physical abuse. Jacques Courbe is a dwarf that works at a Circus. He has no fiends at and feels alone until he meets Mademoiselle Jeanne Marie that also works at the circus. Jacques tries to get Jeanne’s attention but she has no desire getting to know Jacques because she already has her eyes on another man named Simon. Even tough Jacques dog didn’t like Jeanne, he would stand up for her by saying “why must you always growl” (Robbins 162). Jacques inherits some land and money from a family member that passed away and once Jeanne finds out, her persona changes for Jacques. Jacques asked for Jeanne’s hand in marriage and Jeanne accepted. Soon after the proposal, Jeanne was already imaging what her life would be like when Jacques dies saying “Simon would be overjoyed to marry into a country estate” (Robins 164).
