It creates a sense of an atmosphere and can help the reader feel the emotions that the characters have. The mood is there to help grab the reader’s attention and make sense of the environment. All fiction books use this method, but two novels that used it especially well are Dracula by Bram Stoker and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. To begin, Dracula’s mood is very gloomy and dark.
Tone can show how scrooge can change throughout the story to support the theme. “Bah, said Scrooge. Humbug!” and “ He was so fluttered and so glowing with his good intentions that his broken voice would scarcely answer to his call. ”These quotes show how the tone of the beginning of the story was unhappy and the end of the story was joyous and some may even say changed.
Any successful author understands that in order for their narratives to be read and liked by the general public, they must be able to connect to a reader’s emotions easily and powerfully. While the reader is reading the text, their mood might vary depending on what the author writes about, and how well they convey what they want their readers to feel. Writers often evoke many types of literary elements to achieve this, including imagery, diction, and their own tone. Take, for instance, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Her books are filled with fantastical aspects, and magical happenings, but this book series would most likely not be as popular if the reader could not connect with the character’s actions and emotions on a deeper level.
There are many tones observed in this narrative. Tone is defined as the general attitude of a piece of writing. A very important tone present shown through the novel is emotional. Throughout the narrative, Douglass truly lets his emotions run wild whether it was from telling his brutal experiences while enslaved or his famous speeches that really questioned what your view of freedom is. Overall, Frederick Douglass’s tone is generally straightforward and serious as he covers emotional, heart wrenching topics.

At the end of the story, as the narrator sees all the catastrophic events happening to the house, he changes to a careful and calm manner tone.
Tone us pretty much an overall feeling of the story. When you start to break down tone into feelings, you can see how you could manipulate it to express your feelings. Jamaica Kincaid chose to attack loving by the fact that the lecture is advice on life. Ms. Kincaid attacks caring by telling her what not to do. The author attacks strict by not letting her speak very much.
