In the poem "The Unborn", the speaker is talking about children that have not been brought into the world. The children mentioned are the speakers and their significant other that they could have. The tone of this poem is want.She explains how she can see these children and you can hear the desire in the tone of the poem. When a reader is reading through the poem they get a feeling of desire which takes over the poem. The over all tone of the poem is desire because the speaker says "All the children we could have." which this in turn relates to the children the speaker wants to concieve. They are comparing the unborn children to the gnats flying around the street light. "Sometimes I can almost see, around our heads, Like gnats around a streetlight in summer." The image of the gnats presents a negative image beacuse the speaker can see the children they want but can not have. The gnats resmeble all of the images the speaker sees in their mind about these children. It shows how much this person wants to have children and how much love they hold for children. They are trying to get the point across that children should have love born or not they should be loved by those around them. The dead letter office represents the love the unborn children are receiving. These unborn children are not receiving any love, it is as if the love towards them does not exist. The love is dead and does notcoexist like these children do not.
