Have you ever taken care of an older sibling? Have you ever had a life that was very different from your classmates which made it hard to connect with others? Have you ever not had many friends to talk to or lean on? Sounds tough right? Well that is how two girls are in two different stories. Those things explain their life. Olivia, from the book Wonder written by RJ Palacio, and Squeaky, from the short story “Raymond’s Run” written by Toni Cade Bambara, are tough girls. Olivia and Squeaky are tough girls because they are fiercely protective of their brothers, they don’t have a typical life but handle it with grace anyways, and they don’t know how to be a friend so they don’t have many.

For instance, Olivia just hides from her old friends when they start to change instead of working things out with them. They came back from summer break and seemed very different from Olivia, which she didn’t like. Instead of telling the girls that she just hid from them and stops being their friend eventually. This illustrates how Olivia doesn’t know how to be a friend - and because she doesn’t have many it shows how she has a tough life. High school can be hard enough as it is without having your friends by your side to help you through it. Like Olivia, Squeaky doesn’t know how to be a friend because she doesn’t even give a girl a chance to talk to her or smile because she just assumes they are up to something. This is illustrated when she runs into a few girls on the street and before the girls even start talking Squeaky is on defense and calling the girls mean names. This clearly shows how Squeaky doesn’t know how to be a friend because you would call girls mean names before letting them talk. This also makes her tough because she doesn’t seem to let it bother her that she doesn’t have any friends.
