Tony was raised in a uneducated town with educated parents who made it their mission to help kids be their best. With this childhood Tony is able to see the world very differently. Unlike other coaches, Tony doesn 't give up on his players, he sticks with them and tries different ways of explaining.

When Tony grew up, he wanted to be a priest, but that all changed after the death of Adam. “I am Catholic. It is God’s commandment that I do not kill.” (Mckay 83) After all of that, Tony changed pretty dramatically. He started believing that killing was the answer and that the LRA was correct about everything.
He speaks much of his parents in a classroom setting and the respect both of them showed their students: “My dad believed you can’t teach only one way with only one syllabus, because while some students might get it, others won’t” (Dungy 14). Tony respected his father’s mind set on teaching and how he treated each individual student. I believe this mind set was passed down to Tony. I’ve noticed in my 18 years of life how hard it can be for some people to give credit to people who have gotten them where they are today.
Tony felt his brother's life could be saved, even if he felt his own had already, at age fourteen passed the point of no return.” (pg 27) Tony really could of saved Wes’s life by staying away from the drug game himself and being a better role model, but also Wes listening to his brothers advice. Many of them are young, relentless, and possibly want attention. Many of these males will wind up with the wrong crowd making stupid, terrible decisions, for example, drug dealing. The quote that follows will back up the previous statement, “He was a veteran of the drug game at 18” (Moore 57). In this part of the story Tony and the other Wes were hanging out and Tony, the other Wes’s brother grew up quickly hanging with the wrong crowd and got in the ‘street business’ of drugs. The altercations leading up to the quote were that Tony was trying to get Wes to go down the same path he did and he wasn’t going for it.
The loss of Tony’s innocence from situations he counters plays an important role in the maturity he develops by the end of the story. As he is guided by Ultima, lessons are learned and she encourages him to be whatever he wants to be, and grow up into someone that he will be proud of. Magical realism overall contributes to his childhood experiences and his interactions with the world, which shape him into the man he

I would like to start off this essay off by saying I am very honored to be invited to join the National Honor Society. Ever since I was young I loved helping people. I did this through Girl Scouts, which I participated in five years ago. One year my Girl Scout troop went to Kennedy Hospital in December and sang Christmas carols to cheer people up. It was events like this that really shaped who I am as a person.
A Hero for the Ages. Philip Zimbardo, a psychologist and a professor at Stanford University once said, “To be a hero is when you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice. Heroes always take risks. Heroes always are deviant. Heroes always do something that most people don’t.”
